Biography

John Wesley was an American painter known for his distinctive blend of Pop art and Surrealism, characterised by two-dimensional, heavily outlined and stylised manner of painting. Wesley was born in 1928 in Los Angeles. Driven by an intense passion for art, the largely self-taught artist began making paintings in the Abstract Expressionist style in the early 1950s and took evening art classes while working different blue-collar jobs.
Wesley’s work is often associated with the Pop movement due to his use of mass-media imagery, including fashion and news images from books and magazines, and simplified forms. However, his paintings carry a surreal quality, often infused with a subtle, ironic humour. His subject matter frequently included isolated figures, animals, and everyday objects, rendered in a manner that was both detached and emotionally charged.
